If you're looking to get a job as a security job, then you might have found yourself surfing around online looking for information. This can be quite frustrating as there is an abundance of opinion on the topic, and much of it is unfortunately secondhand or conjecture. The fact is that there are some concrete things you will need to do before you try and get a job as a security officer.  The truth of the matter is that no matter how trustworthy and skilled you are, there are some things you need to get before any company will hire you. Here is what you need to do.

Get Your License

You need a license to become a security guard in The Bronx. Without a license, you won't have access to reputable businesses that are looking to employ security guards. A license will allow you to find jobs with individual companies, as well as sign up with a security guard staffing agency that can find you temp work.

In order to get the license, you must complete an 8 hour training course. This is the basic course that all security guards must pass. It will only take you one day to take this course, and then once you pass the test, you will be eligible to be a security guard.

Take Additional Training

After you have taken your security guard 8 hour test, you can get your first job. However, it's important to remember that the testing does not stop there. The next test and certification that you will need to take is the 16 hour certification. You must take this within the first few months of getting your license. Then, after you have taken these exams, you will need to periodically update your certificates to maintain an up to date status.

Consider Becoming A Bonded Security Guard

If you really want to move forward and become a high end security guard, then it is a good idea to look into becoming a bonded security guard. This can help you get access to jobs where it is important that the guard has insurance. A bonded security guard is in high demand. They are someone who is insured in the event that merchandise or the building itself is damaged.

Add Fire Guard To The Bill

It always helps if you add a fire guard certification to your list. This will allow you to work in buildings that don't have sprinklers and which require a person who has the ability to look for and stop fires. It's an added bonus, especially for those jobs that require you to watch over a building at night where there are few other people on hand and you will need to be mindful for any fires that would be noticed during the day, but which might be a big issue in a big empty building at night.
